菌剂由一种或数种有特定功能的微生物和培养基、添加剂(载体)组成的制品。借助其代谢过程或代谢产物，可促使土壤中某些植物必需元素的含量增加，或使土壤中难以为植物吸收利用的物质转化为易被利用的物质。某些菌剂还能用于防治植物的病虫害。根瘤菌剂和抗生菌剂是应用较多的菌剂；有些国家还曾应用磷细菌剂、钾细菌剂和自生固氮菌剂等。根瘤菌剂由能与豆科植物共生并形成根瘤的根瘤菌制成。在与豆科植物共生的条件下，根瘤菌的固氮酶可将大气中的游离态氮还原转化为氨，供豆科植物利用。根瘤菌有专一性，即某种根瘤菌只能与某种豆科植物共生才能固氮。据此，根瘤菌剂又可分大豆根瘤菌剂、花生根瘤菌剂、紫云英根瘤菌剂和苜蓿根瘤菌剂等。生产根瘤菌剂应选用感染性强、固氮酶活性大、豆血红蛋白含量高的根瘤菌株，以保证使用效果。抗生菌剂是含有某些对植物致病菌有拮抗作用的细菌、真菌或放线菌的制品，而以拮抗性放线菌制成的菌剂较为理想，通常是用抗生菌与自然肥料混合堆制的方法繁殖生产而成。其他菌剂因效果不稳定现已较少应用。菌剂施入土壤以后，其中菌体的存活率和活性的大小受土壤生态因子 （土壤微生物状况、 土壤水分状况、有机质含量和pH）以及菌剂自身质量的影响。因此，施用菌剂时应与其他农业技术措施密切配合并随制随用。保存时应注意避光和防潮防毒。施用方法包括拌种、浸种、蘸根或与基肥混合施用等。
